Aetna’s commitment

For over ten years, Aetna has worked to address racial and ethnic disparities in health care. In 2001, our chairman’s initiative focused on achieving racial and ethnic equality in support of our values, which puts all the people who use our services at the center of all we do.

Aetna has developed a multifaceted approach to address health issues that are more common among various ethnic and racial minority populations. This initiative includes the collection of race and ethnicity information from nearly six million Aetna members – about 35% of our membership – who voluntarily provide the data. By using such data, we are able to understand where the best opportunities exist to focus targeted programs to address health care disparities and improve the quality of care for our members.

It’s undisputed

Studies show that racial and ethnic minority populations in the United States tend to receive a lower quality of health care than non-minorities, even when factors like having health insurance and income levels are compared. These disparities in health care have clear consequences on the health and longevity of America’s growing minority populations.

At Aetna, we take every step to enable our members to receive high-quality health care — regardless of race or ethnicity. Addressing the persistent challenges of disparities in health care for minorities can lead to better health outcomes for these populations.

Data drives our efforts

Currently, Aetna has collected race and ethnicity information from nearly six million Aetna members who have voluntarily provided the data. By using this information, we are able to understand where the best opportunities are in our membership to create targeted, culturally appropriate programs.

The goal is to improve the quality of care for all of our members. Better care means better health outcomes — and a better quality of life.
