  • Moving to a new home may be stressful and expensive. But if you’re organized, you can minimize moving costs and make the entire process go smoothly. Here is a timeline to help you get started.

    4 weeks before move:

    Start looking for licensed and professional moving companies, get estimates from three movers, ask friends, colleagues and relatives for recommendations. When you find the right company for you and your needs, ask determine what kind of insurance they provide, ask them plenty of questions, for instance about the different options available, like packing and unpacking services. If you choose to move with the help of your friends, determine if you need to rent a moving truck. Most people move on weekends, so if you’re doing the same, be sure to book your truck rental now.

    3 weeks before move:

    Once you’ve selected a moving company, go through your belongings and sort them by what you will keep, what you’ll sell or donate, and what you plan to toss. You can organize a garage sale to make some money off the things you aren’t taking with you. Start packing early, collect the items you won’t need until 30 days after the move, it will save you time in the future. Take pictures of rooms in your new home and think about the possible placement of your furniture there.

    2 weeks before move:

    Begin boxing up the things you won’t need right away. When you’re purchasing packing supplies, get 25 percent more than you think you’ll need. If you have jewelry or other valuable items, don’t mix up them with your other packed items. Keep them in a safe place so you can transport them yourself. Make sure to label all the boxes. If you are not using the professional movers, think about the travel plan. Make arrangements to get your animals and plants to your new home. If you have children, it will be great to organize a childcare for some days, so you can 100% focus on your moving process. 

    1 week before move:

    Leave your house or apartment as clean as it was when you moved in. Vacuum the carpets, sweep hardwood floors, dust all surfaces and clean the bathroom and kitchen. Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator, eat all the frozen foods you have, or give them to a neighbor or friend. Organize the boxes called “open first”, this is stuff you’ll need right away in your new home – dishes, utensils, a few pots and pans, coffee pot, can opener, towels, toilet tissue, toothbrushes etc. check in with your mover to confirm the time and date of the move. Make sure to have any documents related to the move at the ready.

    Moving day:

    Make sure you’re well rested before you hit the road! Take a last walk through your house and make sure nothing was left behind. All doors and windows should be locked, all switches turned off.

    Help your movers to identify the most fragile items right away. You should coordinate all the process and answer the questions. Get copies of shipping documents.

    Remember,it may take a couple of weeks to unpack all the boxes. You don’t have to unpack everything in one day.
